Spring has finally arrived, and for me that means one thing — BBQ season is back! The warmer days, longer afternoons and smell of something cooking outside always make me want to pack up the caravan and head away for a few days. 

We’re getting the caravan ready for a short spring getaway, and naturally the Thermomix® TM7 is coming along too — along with our Border Collie, who is always ready for a camping adventure. 

This trip is going to be a bit of a test run because I want to see just how practical it is to use my Thermomix® when we’re camping off-grid, and maybe even some Netflix.  

We have a KickAss 2400 Lithium Power Station, so I’ll be testing how well it handles running the Thermomix® while also keeping our Starlink Mini powered. It worked a treat the other weekend when we were out at the farm where we usually get no internet service. 

We have the Starlink Mini on the Unlimited Roam plan for $210 a month, which works really well for the way we travel. One of the features I really like is that we can pause the service when we’re not using it, rather than paying the full amount every month. There’s also the option to put it into Standby Mode for $15 a month, which makes it much more practical for something we mainly use when travelling. 

Having Starlink running while we’re off-grid means I can still jump onto Cookidoo®, browse recipes and decide what we feel like cooking — even when we’re nowhere near a powered caravan site. I love the idea of being out in the bush or beside the water and still being able to search Cookidoo® for inspiration rather than having to plan every single meal before we leave. But I also save some of my favourites in the recipe list or bookmark, so even if there is no internet, there are recipes ready to pull up and cook.

Of course, preparation is half the fun! 

Before we head away, I’m giving everything a trial at home and preparing a few caravan staples. First on the list are homemade Tomato Ketchup and BBQ sauce. They’re perfect for spring BBQs, and I love knowing exactly what has gone into them.

Then I’m testing a few proper camping dinners. 

One night will be Baked Pork Loin with Rice, followed by a Roast Lamb with Vegetables and Homemade Mint Sauce. I’ll probably do the roast lamb in the Weber Baby Q that we take away with us. Using the Thermomix® and Varoma® means I can make complete meals without needing lots of different pots and pans — exactly what I want when travelling and trying to keep washing-up to a minimum. 

And because it wouldn’t be a spring getaway without something refreshing, I’m planning to make the Pink Lemonade from Cookidoo® as well. I can already picture sitting outside the caravan in the afternoon sun with a cold glass while the dog relaxes nearby.

While in the caravan testing everything today I also whipped up a sweet treat in just a few minutes using the Fruity Dream recipe from Cookidoo®. I used banana as the fruit and it was absolutely delicious — and a definite hit with the kids. It was also another great little test for the off-grid setup, and the KickAss 2400 Lithium Power Station handled it like a pro with no issues at all. It’s reassuring to know I can make something quick and fun like this without needing mains power. 

This little getaway will also be an important practice run for our much bigger South Australia caravan trip over the Christmas holidays. I want to know exactly what works, how much power we’re using, how long the power station lasts with both the Thermomix® and Starlink running, what equipment I actually need and which Thermomix® accessories are genuinely useful when caravan space is limited. 

At the moment, my caravan Thermomix® kit would include the Varoma®, spatula, butterfly whisk, simmering basket, measuring cup, a good heatproof mat or board, reusable containers for leftovers and sauces, and a few basic cleaning items. 

But I’m sure there are some clever travelling Thermomix® ideas I haven’t thought of yet!
