There are some kitchen appliances you buy with great enthusiasm, use religiously for a fortnight and then quietly exile to the back of a cupboard where they spend the rest of their days gathering dust beside the fondue set.

My Thermomix® TM7 has had quite the opposite fate.

It lives on my bench because it rarely gets a day off.

When people ask me whether I actually use my Thermomix® enough to justify having it, I sometimes wonder where to begin. There is no dramatic answer because, for me, its value isn’t really found in one spectacular recipe or one clever function. It is woven through the ordinary rhythm of the week: breakfast, lunch, dinner, baking, meal preparation, caravanning, birthdays, and coffee.

This past week was a perfect example.

There were pizzas and pancakes, egg sandwiches and birthday cake, homemade flour and sugar, brownies, coffee and sauces. Nothing particularly extravagant. Nothing that required me to transform the kitchen into a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Just real food, real life and one very busy TM7.

And when I looked back over everything it had done in only a few days, I realised this was probably the best way to explain why I love it.

1. It turns pizza night into something much better

Pizza night has always had a certain magic about it.

It is relaxed, casual and gloriously forgiving. Everyone can choose their own toppings, nobody expects fine dining and eating with your hands is positively encouraged.

This week, though, pizza night began long before the toppings appeared.

I made the pizza dough in the Thermomix®, then made pizza sauce from scratch and deliberately made enough to put some aside for another meal. One cooking session, two future dinners. That is the sort of kitchen mathematics I can get behind.

I also made Pizza Bianca, which has quickly become one of those deceptively simple foods that somehow disappears from the table at alarming speed.

What I love most about making pizza this way is that several things I might once have bought separately begin with ingredients I already have. Flour, yeast, tomatoes, herbs, oil. The pantry becomes less like a cupboard full of products and more like a box of possibilities.

The TM7 kneads the dough. It makes the sauce. I choose the toppings.

And suddenly Friday night takeaway has some competition.

2. It makes the ingredients I’ve run out of

There is a particular kind of irritation that comes from starting a recipe and discovering you have run out of something painfully basic.

Self-raising flour, for example. Or caster sugar. Or icing sugar.

They are hardly exotic ingredients, yet somehow they seem to disappear at precisely the moment you need them.

This week I made all three in my Thermomix®.

It is one of those quieter uses that rarely makes the glossy brochure but makes everyday cooking considerably easier. Instead of abandoning the recipe, changing plans or making an emergency dash to the supermarket, I can often make what I need from ingredients already sitting in the pantry.

Plain flour becomes self-raising flour. Ordinary sugar becomes caster sugar. Caster sugar becomes icing sugar.

The humble pantry staple gets a costume change and returns to the stage ready for its next role.

There is something deeply satisfying about that.

3. It comes caravanning with us

My Thermomix® does not spend its entire life sitting politely at home.

It goes on holidays too. You can access the previous post “Spring, BBQs and taking the Thermomix Offgrid” here.

We recently took the caravan to Harrington, NSW, and the TM7 came with us. People sometimes assume a Thermomix® belongs in a large kitchen with acres of bench space, but I actually find it incredibly useful in the caravan because space is exactly what we don’t have.

Instead of packing multiple appliances, I have one machine doing several jobs.

In the mornings, I used Kettle Mode to heat the water for my coffee, which may not sound particularly revolutionary until you understand that coffee is less a beverage and more an essential operating system.

Later, I used the Thermomix® to cook eggs for egg salad sandwiches for lunch.

We also made pancakes.

Coffee, breakfast, lunch — all from the same machine, sitting inside a caravan kitchen where every centimetre of bench space has to earn its keep.

We powered the TM7 using our KickAss power system, which made using it while caravanning even easier.

There is something rather wonderful about waking up somewhere away from home, looking out at a completely different view and still being able to cook the way I normally do.

The kitchen changes. The routine doesn’t have to.

Pancakes in the caravan are proof that the TM7 doesn’t need to stay at home to earn its keep.

4. It makes baking feel spontaneous again

Baking used to require a certain amount of planning.

Do I have everything? Where are the scales? Did I buy icing sugar? Which mixer do I need? How many bowls am I about to dirty?

This week I made a Brookie recipe from Shadow Baking, featured in a Thermomix® Mix Collector’s Edition magazine.

For this recipe, I used Manual Cooking rather than simply following a Guided Cooking recipe.

And I really enjoyed that.

One of the things I like about having the TM7 is that I don’t feel restricted to recipes designed specifically for the machine. I can use recipes from magazines, family recipe books, handwritten cards, websites or recipes I have been making for years and adapt the Thermomix® to suit what I am doing.

Sometimes Cookidoo® leads the way.

Sometimes I do.

That flexibility makes the machine feel less like a recipe device and more like part of the kitchen.

5. It keeps old family recipes alive

This was probably my favourite thing I made all week.

For my mum’s birthday, I wanted to make a hummingbird cake from an old recipe I already had.

Rather than searching Cookidoo® for something similar, I wanted that cake.

So I gave the original recipe to ChatGPT and asked it to convert the method into a Thermomix® recipe.

Then I added the converted recipe to Created Recipes in Cookidoo®, so now it sits alongside the other recipes I use.

I made the cake in the Thermomix®, made the icing sugar as well, and the result received plenty of praise.

That entire process made me think about something I hadn’t really considered when I first bought a Thermomix®.

Technology does not have to replace our old recipes.

Sometimes it can help preserve them.

The dog-eared recipe card, the cake your mum made, the biscuits your grandmother baked, the dinner you have been cooking for twenty years — they do not have to disappear simply because the kitchen has become more modern.

Old recipe, new method.

Tradition and technology sharing the same mixing bowl.

I rather like that.

6. It quietly saves me another trip to the supermarket

One of the recurring themes in my cooking lately has been learning to ask a different question.

Instead of automatically thinking, “I need to buy that,” I have started asking, “Can I make that?”

Pizza sauce? Yes. Self-raising flour? Yes. Caster sugar? Yes. Icing sugar? Yes. Pizza dough? Absolutely.

That doesn’t mean I am trying to make every ingredient known to humanity from scratch. I still value convenience, and there are plenty of things I am very happy to buy.

But every time I make something from what I already have, I avoid another product on the shopping list.

Sometimes I save money.

Sometimes I save a trip to the shops.

Sometimes I simply avoid the frustration of discovering halfway through a recipe that the ingredient I thought was in the pantry vanished three Tuesdays ago.

None of those things is dramatic, but everyday life is built from small conveniences.

One less errand here, ten minutes saved there, tomorrow’s sauce already in the freezer.

Tiny wins accumulate.

7. It fits into life instead of asking life to fit around it

Perhaps this is the part I appreciate most.

My Thermomix® does not require me to become someone who spends entire days cooking elaborate meals.

I don’t.

I work full time. We go away in the caravan. Some nights I want to cook. Some nights I want dinner on the table with as little fuss as humanly possible.

Some weekends I am happy to bake hummingbird cake and Brookies.

Other mornings I simply want coffee.

The TM7 fits all of those versions of life.

It can be making pizza dough one day and boiling eggs in a caravan the next. It can turn sugar into icing sugar for a birthday cake and then heat water for coffee before anyone has properly woken up.

Therein lies the joy for me.

The value isn’t always in doing something extraordinary.

Quite often, it is in making the ordinary easier.

Seven jobs, one very normal week

When I look back at this particular week, my Thermomix® helped with pizza dough, pizza sauce, pizza bianca, self-raising flour, caster sugar, icing sugar, Brookies, coffee, boiled eggs, pancakes and a hummingbird birthday cake.

That is quite a résumé for seven days.

Yet none of it felt like I was deliberately trying to “use the Thermomix®”.

I was simply cooking.

And perhaps that is the point.

Homemade Brookies with jars of sauces and pantry staples beside a Thermomix® TM7.
From Brookies to sauces and pantry staples, this is the kind of variety that makes the TM7 feel less like one appliance and more like an extra pair of hands.

The appliances that truly earn their place in our homes eventually stop feeling like gadgets. They simply become part of the way we do things.

My TM7 has become part of pizza night and birthday cakes, caravan mornings and weekday meals, new recipes and old favourites.

It chops, kneads, weighs, heats, mixes and cooks, but the thing I value most isn’t written on the function screen.

It makes cooking feel easier, more spontaneous and, quite often, more fun.

And for something that spends its life sitting on the kitchen bench, it certainly gets around.

I’d love to know…

If you already own a Thermomix®, what did yours make this week? Not the fanciest thing or the most impressive thing — just the everyday jobs you now barely think twice about.

And if you are considering a TM7, what would you most like it to make easier in your kitchen?
